Online Grocery Shopping



Click or Mortar?
Over the past 20 years, e-commerce has steadily risen in size and reach. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, e-commerce sales accounted for roughly 10 percent of total retail sales in the U.S. last year, with some categories seeing a significantly higher share of online sales. Groceries have traditionally trailed other retail categories in the transition to e-commerce and, according to estimates from Kantar Retail, they will continue to do so. Read more.





Ready for Take-off?
While grocery sales have been slower than other retail categories in moving online, a recent forecast by Kantar Retail suggests that we might see some significant movement over the next few years. Having grown from $3 billion to $20 billion between 2009 and 2017, Kantar expects online food and alcohol sales to grow by another $35 billion within the next four years to reach $55 billion by 2021. Read more.

Google's European Dominance
In April 2016, the European Commission started its investigation against Google for allegedly breaching EU antitrust rules. The company was accused of abusing Android’s dominant position in the smartphone market to strengthen its position in other areas such as web search, browsing and mobile apps. The below chart illustrates Google's dominance in the largest EU markets. Based on StatCounter data, the chart shows the company's market share in web search, mobile operating systems and web browsers in the second quarter of 2018. Read more.

Financial Inequality 
The situation with regards to financial inequality is worst in the United States where the share of wealth held by the richest 10 percent of households stands at 79 percent. The bottom 60 percent of U.S. households only hold 2.4 percent of household wealth. The inequality gap is also wide in Europe and the top-10 percent of households control 68 percent of wealth in the Netherlands and 64 percent in Denmark. In both countries, the share held by the bottom 60 percent of households is negative which means that on average, these households have liabilities exceeding the value of their assets. Read more.

Greece Returns To Growth 
While the fear today is that the migration crisis could ultimately destroy the EU, the fear yesterday was that the Greek financial crisis would do the same. According to a statement from the International Monetary Fund, however, Greece has now largely eliminated its macroeconomic imbalances and is making progress. It is still facing serious challenges but growth has returned, unemployment is starting to decline and a recently-agreed debt relief package will secure medium-term stability. Read more.
